The premier tournament of Asia, the Asia Cup, kicks-off today. While the showpiece event starts with a relatively low-key fixture, Afghanistan facing Hong Kong, expect maximum intensity from both sides for different reasons. Hong Kong have a rare opportunity to test the waters against the big boys, and while they are a work in progress, the team isn't to be taken lightly at all. Especially in these conditions where their bowling might get some help due to the sluggish nature of surfaces. Afghanistan, meanwhile, will be participating as a strong favourite and will want to make a statement in the tournament opener before they face the stronger teams.
The embarrassing defeat in the tri-series final in Sharjah would have come as rude awakening for Rashid Khan's men who were tipped to win the tournament. In fact, in the final, they had Pakistan on their knees and the eventual target of 142 was also definitely under-par. However, Afghanistan came nowhere close as they crashed to 66 all out, looking shockingly clueless against Pakistan's spinners led by Mohammad Nawaz. While conditions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi should be better for batting than Sharjah, Afghanistan need to be wary about their batting department. The bowling department with a battery of mystery spinners should be too good for even the best batting sides but that would count for little if Afghanistan's batters don't step up.
Hong Kong, meanwhile, are coming into this tournament with two multi-national tournaments in 2025. The first one saw them hosting the tournament with Kuwait, Nepal and Qatar being the other three teams. Unfortunately, Hong Kong couldn't make it to the final and ended with a third-place finish by sealing a thrilling one-run win against Qatar. In the following multi-national tournament, they made the final before losing to Malaysia but with the other two teams being Samoa and Singapore, you'd say that Hong Kong were expected to make the summit clash. With a settled core of players, Hong Kong have the resources to compete and they'll hope to cause a flutter or two in this tournament.
Key Players
Afghanistan
Allah Ghazanfar - Afghanistan's latest mystery spinner has had a injury-ridden start to his international career but like he showed on ODI debut against South Africa last year, Ghazanfar can be dreadful to face when on song. Hong Kong's batters are unlikely to have faced him and he could be the danger man, along with the usual suspects Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad.
Hong Kong
Babar Hayat - Arguably Hong Kong's best batter, Hayat's all-round game against pace and seam makes him a threat, especially given his power game that can take any bowling apart. How he fares against Afghanistan's spinners will be a key battle to watch out for.
