Babar Azam and Imam-Ul-Haq opened the innings for Pakistan after Mohammad Rizwan decided to bat first at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday. The Pakistan top-order, which came under fire for making just 22 runs during the batting powerplay against New Zealand in the tournament opener, struggled against India as well. Rohit Sharma used five different bowlers in the first 10 overs and none of the Pakistan batters could make most of the fielding restrictions.
Imam, who returned to the squad to replace injured Fakhar Zaman, was particularly slow, making just 10 runs from 24 deliveries. He couldn't find the fence even once before being run out by Axar Patel in the last over of the powerplay.

However, it was former captain Babar Azam who became the first Pak wicket to fall in the second-last over the batting powerplay. Babar, who was criticised for his senseless slow batting while chasing a big total against New Zealand, managed five boundaries against India. However, his innings also included 18 dot balls when he was dismissed for 23 by Hardik Pandya.

Hardik Pandya produced a good-length delivery outside off, tempting Babar Azam to go for a cover drive. The former national captain, who had welcomed Hardik with a boundary decided to attack again. However, the right-hander mistimed it, making a thick edge that went straight to KL Rahul behind the stumps. Hardik celebrated by gesturing a "bye-bye" while on the move, although he didn't look at the departing batter.
India, who won their opening match against Bangladesh, announced an unchanged line-up for the much-anticipated clash.
