FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reportedly dismissed the plan to introduce blue cards in football. According to reports, the FIFA chief is of the opinion that the introduction of blue cards goes against the essence of the beautiful game and thus shouldn't be allowed on the fields.

According to a report published by The Telegraph in February, the blue cards were to be introduced in the upcoming FA Cup and Women's FA Cup matches on a trial basis. However, Infantino has shot down the proposal.

"This is a topic that is non-existent for us. FIFA is completely opposed to blue cards. I was not aware of this topic, the president of FIFA - and I think Fifa has a say in IFAB. No way. We have to be serious. We are always open to looking at ideas and proposals and everything has to be treated with respect of course. But once you look at it you also have to protect the essence and tradition of the game. There is no blue card," The Goal.com quoted him as saying.

The blue card proposal

The IFAB proposal stated that if a footballer is shown the blue card, he/she will be suspended from play for a period of 10 minutes. A referee will have the liberty to show a player the blue card if he/she commits a "cynical foul" or show dissent towards a match official.
