Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for Covid-19 after he missed his team's Champions League win over Benfica on Wednesday complaining of a "flu-like infection".

The 34-year-old German coach was absent from the Bayern dugout as the team routed Benfica 4-0, but had sent instructions to his coaching staff remotely.

He stayed back in the team hotel in Lisbon, informing staff and players that he was unwell and did not want to risk others catching any infection he had.

Bayern released a statement saying that Nagelsmann would fly back separately to Munich on a medical plane, and isolate there.

Nagelsmann had joined from RB Leipzig in the summer, succeeding Hansi Flick, who was appointed head coach of the German national team.

Since the young coach's arrival in Munich, the team has continued its stellar form, topping the Bundesliga table and the Champions League group stage table.

Assistant coaches Dino Toppmoller and Xaver Zembrod oversaw the Benfica game.

Now that he is isolating, Nagelsmann will also miss the defending champions' league match against Hoffenheim on Saturday.
