Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has tested positive for the coronavirus and will miss the Champions League quarterfinal match against Liverpool on Wednesday. He will stay in isolation for 10 days as per the COVID-19 quarantine protocols, the club said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Real Madrid CF informs that our player, Sergio Ramos, has tested positive in the last COVID-19 test that he has been carried out,” the club said.

Ramos had missed the first leg of the quarterfinal tie last week due to a calf injury. Real Madrid won 3-1 and will look to progress to the last four when the sides clash on Wednesday in Anfield.

The 35-year-old will be allowed to return to action only after his test results come back negative.

He will also be unavailable for selection for the Blancos’ next two La Liga fixtures away at Getafe and Cadiz. Ramos is likely to return when Zinedine Zidane’s side takes on Real Betis at home on April 24 if he produces a negative result for COVID-19 and recovers from his calf injury.

The defender, who underwent a knee surgery in February, has missed Madrid’s last three games due to injury and his last appearance for the club came in the second leg of their last-16 Champions League clash against Atalanta on March 16.

Ramos has been absent for 27 matches across all competitions due to a variety of different injuries and ailments. The Spaniard has made just 20 appearances for Madrid in total this term, scoring four goals.
