Barcelona FC have announced that their latest signing Miralem Pjanic has tested positive for the coronavirus and won’t be joining the team for pre-season for 15 days. The club said the Bosnian midfielder is in good health and is isolating at home.
Pjanic was signed from Juventus for 65 million euros in June.
“Miralem Pjanic tested positive for PCR on Saturday, August 22 after suffering some discomfort. The player is in good health and is isolated at home,” the club said in a statement.
“For this reason, the player will not travel to Barcelona until 15 days later to join Barca,” it added.
The 30-year-old reportedly felt unwell last week and underwent a COVID-19 test, with his results returning positive on Saturday.
Pjanic, who is yet to officially appear for Barcelona, won’t join his new teammates for another two weeks. However, he won’t face much of a setback as Barca will start their La Liga campaign only on the third week of the season due to their participation in the last phase of the Champions League.
Barcelona’s first team players have been taking some time off since their humiliating loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. The Catalan club players will resume training at the end of the month.
Bayern, meanwhile, lifted their sixth Champions League title after defeating first-time finalists PSG 1-0 in the final, with the lone goal from Kingsley Coman in the 59th minute.
