Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has revealed the exchange of words between him and former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff on that fateful day in 2007 before he sent every ball off of Stuart Broad out of the park.
Yuvraj was the cynosure of all eyes that day when he hit six consecutive sixes in a single over, but the Indian cricketer recalled that there was a heated argument between him and Flintoff just before that had pumped him up.
It was during the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa, and Yuvraj revealed that it was not his intention to hit consecutive sixes. “My argument with Flintoff left me furious,” he told Sports Tak.
“I hit Flintoff for two fours on good deliveries, and he didn’t like it. After his over, I was walking to the other end to speak to Dhoni. He said something to me. I can’t repeat here exactly what he said then. But he told me something like those were mediocre shots. It led to an argument and he said, ‘come outside and I will cut your throat’.”
To this, Yuvraj said, “Do you see this bat in my hand? Do you know where I am going to hit you with this?”
Before their heated conversation escalated, the umpire came broke the duo apart. Yuvraj said that he was “very pumped” after that. “I felt I had to send every ball out of the park. Luckily, that was my day,” he said. He said the first shot that went for a six still amazes him, and he wonders how he made the shot.
Yuvraj sent the rest of the deliveries off Broad, who bore the Indian all-rounder’s wrath, for sixes as well, smashing a 12-ball fifty, which is the fastest recorded half-century in T20 cricket till date. Yuvraj made 58 runs, which included seven sixes and three fours, off 16 balls.
India won the match by 18 runs after restricting England for 200/6.
