Hasin Jahan, the estranged wife of cricketer Mohammed Shami, thanked the judiciary for issuing an arrest warrant against him in a domestic violence case.
Kolkata's Alipore court issued the warrant in the case she filed last year. It has given Shami 15 days to surrender.
"I am grateful to judicial system. I have been fighting for justice more than a year now. You all know, Shami thinks that he is all too powerful, that he is a big cricketer," Hasin Jahan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"Had I not been from West Bengal, had Mamata Banerjee not been our chief minister, I wouldn't have been able to live safely here. Amroha (Uttar Pradesh) police was trying to harass me and my daughter, it was God's grace that they didn't succeed," she said.
In April this year, Hasin Jahan was detained for allegedly created a ruckus at Shami's house in Uttar Pradesh. She was later released on bail.
The Alipore court also issued an arrest warrant against the pacer's brother, Hasid Ahmed, in the same case.
In March last year, Hasin Jahan took to Facebook to accuse Shami of domestic abuse and having extra-marital affairs. She also shared screenshots of WhatsApp and Messenger chats between Shami and the women. The right-arm pacer was charged under Section 498A (dowry harassment) and 354A (sexual harassment) by the Kolkata Police.
Shami has denied all allegations as a campaign to defame him.
In March this year, the cricketer was charged with dowry and sexual harassment and his wife had demanded Rs 7 lakh as monthly maintenance.
Hasin Jahan had also alleged that Shami had been involved in match-fixing, following which the BCCI had dropped him from its central contracts.
He was, however, given a clean chit by a BCCI panel after an internal investigation and was brought back into its central contract scheme.
Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan got married in 2014.
