The Indira Docks were a key focus area of the Rs 5,028.17 crore push by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) into the Mumbai Port.

The overall maritime push for a development pipeline of 63 projects was announced at an event marking the 154th Foundation Day of one of the country's oldest ports.

The Indira Dock Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Agreement was one of the two key agreements highlighted by Union Minister (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal, at the event.

The agreement with two private players—J M Baxi Ports & Logistics and M Dinshaw & Co—exchanged at the event, deals with the privatisation of as many as 21 berths of the Indira Docks.

The O&M agreement is expected to modernise cargo handling at the port and provide a sustainable source of revenue for it.

Inspired from the Visakhapatnam Port model, it is expected to help the Mumbai Port better compete with its younger rival, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, over the next ten years, with the two operators generating Rs 987 crore in revenue in the process.

The other of the two key agreements signed by the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) was for the Rs 887 crore Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina project, cleared by the MoPSW back in December 2025.

The project for a world-class marina in Mumbai will be funded by both the MPA, which will develop core marina infrastructure at an investment of Rs 470 crore (on an EPC basis), while a private operator will pour in Rs 417 crore towards developing the marina's onshore facilities.

Other key projects that are a key part of the Rs 5028.17 crore push include seven inaugurated projects worth Rs 132.29 crore, 34 foundation stone-laying projects worth Rs 1,354.59 crore, and 22 newly announced projects worth Rs 3,541.29 crore.

"The projects showcased today reflect our commitment to building world-class port infrastructure, improving logistics efficiency, promoting cruise tourism, strengthening coastal shipping and creating opportunities for future generations,” Sonowal said at the MPA event.
