New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) began the New Year on a high note, announcing a record monthly cargo throughput of 5.44 million metric tonnes (MMT) in December 2025, its highest ever in a single month.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the port said it had “achieved an all-time high monthly traffic handling of 5.44MMT in December 2025”, beating its previous best of 4.7MMT recorded in March 2025.

The port authority credited this milestone to the combined efforts of port employees, port users and other stakeholders, and said the strong finish to the calendar year gives it confidence to chase its 50MMT annual traffic target.

The 5.44MMT figure means NMPA handled significantly more cargo in December 2025 than in any month of the previous year.

While the December 2024 operational statement does not list a single headline tonnage, it shows that 116 vessels were handled that month, across dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk and container cargo categories.operational-performance-december-2024.pdf

By contrast, the port’s December 2025 update highlights not the vessel count but the much higher volume of cargo moved—suggesting that average ship parcel sizes and overall throughput have both risen. Despite that relatively lower vessel count, NMPA managed to ramp up its monthly cargo to 5.44MMT by December 2025. A year ago, in December 2024, the port posted 3.77MMT in total traffic throughput.

NMPA said the port was moving “with confidence towards achieving the target of 50 MMT”, signalling a goal to reach that annual throughput level in the near term.
