Amritpal Singh Mehron, the key accused in the murder of Punjab-based social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, alias "Kamal Kaur Bhabhi", was brought back from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was brought to India early on Friday morning and arrested at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, a report claimed.

Two others have already been arrested in connection with the case. They were identified as Jaspreet Singh of Moga and Nimratjit Singh of Tarn Taran. Both confessed during police interrogation that they murdered Kanchan Kumari because her social media content was considered obscene and hurtful to the sentiments of the community, Aaj Tak said in a report.

According to the police, on 11 June 2025, Amritpal Mehron and his associates abducted Kanchan Kumari. She was murdered and her body was left in a car parked in the parking lot of Bathinda's Adesh Hospital. The entire incident was planned in advance by the trio, Aaj Tak quoted the police as saying.

Why was Kanchan Kumari targeted?

Kanchan Kumari's body was discovered when locals noticed a foul smell coming from the stationary car and alerted the authorities. The police reportedly learned that she had left for Bathinda on 9 June for a promotional event but lost contact with her family in the following days.

After the murder, Mehron fled the country to evade arrest and went into hiding in the Middle East. However, Punjab Police, with the help of central agencies, traced his location.

Following the killing, a video surfaced on social media purportedly showing Mehron stating that Kumari was killed by two of his accomplices due to her "immoral and vulgar content" on social media. He also warned others creating "objectionable content" to refrain from such activities.

According to the police, Mehron also threatened at least two other female social media influencers in Punjab. The 30-year-old Mehron, a self-styled Sikh radical leader, also hailed from Moga.
