The family of the 18-month-old who died after being administered anaesthesia in Kerala is now staging a protest demanding action against all the doctors they hold responsible for the incident.
Police have registered a case against a doctor at the hospital based on a complaint by the family, who alleged medical negligence.
The 18-month-old Devansh Suhaurya was the only child of Suraj and Vijisha of Mathamangalam in Eramamm Kuttorr grama panchayat.
The child was born 8 years after they got married.
On July 5, Devansh sustained a cut on his lip while playing in the courtyard of his house.
His parents took him to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur for getting the treatment.
The family alleged that the child became critically ill after he was administered anaesthesia for suturing. The child’s condition soon became critical. The hospital later moved him to the Kannur unit for advanced treatment. He died at around 9 pm on Friday.
Payyannur police registered a case against Dr Anjali Poduval, the anaesthetist at Baby Memorial Hospital, based on a complaint filed by the child's relative, K Rajeevan.
The doctor was booked under section 125 of the BNS, which deals with acts endangering life or personal safety.
The hospital had denied allegations of medical negligence. In a statement, the hospital said that the child suffered from an unexpected cardiac arrest immediately after the administration of anaesthesia. The child was placed on ventilator support before being moved to Kannur Hospital for advanced care.
The family also alleged that the doctors initially informed them that the child would need plastic surgery and that the doctor would come only if they paid a fee of Rs18,000
They also alleged that they had not been informed about the potential risks associated with anaesthesia.
The hospital, meanwhile, has denied the the allegations of forcing medication.
