Heavy rains have swept across Kolkata and the entirety of West Bengal. The heavy downpour that began Thursday evening has continued till Friday morning.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the state, saying that the wet spell is set to continue until next week, with alerts in place for the next four days.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, the monsoon rain is currently running across the Gangetic plains.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation has developed over the Bay of Bengal, pulling in the moisture towards the coast. The active monsoon and the low-pressure pocket have created the perfect conditions for non-stop rain over the state,

The monsoon axis currently covers Anupgarh, Rohtak, south-west Uttar Pradesh, Fursatganj, Dehri, Dhanbad, Bankura, and Digha, while the cyclonic pressure system exists over eastern Bangladesh and adjacent areas at a height of 3.1 km to 7.6 km above mean sea level, leaning southwards with increasing height.

The heavy downpours are likely to continue until Monday. A special alert was issued for gusty winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.

A warning has been issued for thunderstorms and gusty winds going up to 30 to 40kmph in Kolkata.

A special alert was also issued for South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore districts. For gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph.

An orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts of North Bengal on Friday,

On Saturday, the heavy rain is set to lash across both north and south Ebngal districts.

A yellow alert has been issued in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Malda districts of North Bengal. The north-eastern region is set for continuous rainfall till next Thursday. The meteorological department has advised that precautions be taken in case of a possible landslide in the hill river areas.

The yellow alert was also issued for the south Bengal districts of Murshidabad, Nadia, Howrah, Kolkata and East Burdwan.

These districts are likely to receive 7 to 11 cm of rain almost every day from Friday to Tuesday.

Weather officials said that the situation in these districts could remain tense as they are set for continuous rainfall that will shift from one district to another.

Nadia and Murshidabad are likely to bear the brunt on Saturday. Meanwhile, Hooghly, East Burdwan and Nadia could see another heavy spell on Sunday.

The intensity of the downpour may only ease slightly from Tuesday with light to moderate rains, which may continue.
