Following the brutal death of a 12-year-old girl, whose body was found stuffed in a sack, the West Bengal Police have banned gatherings in Baruipur. A youth, identified as Indrajit Tanti, 26, suspected of raping and murdering the girl, was intensely thrashed by locals. He was taken to the hospital in a serious condition and was later declared dead.

The main accused in the case, Anand Sardar, was arrested from the Baruipur market area on Monday. Prabhas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar, the other accused, were arrested yesterday. Three others are in detention and are being questioned.

According to locals, the girl had left her home around 4 pm to buy a gift for her friend’s birthday but did not return. Despite searching extensively, her parents and neighbours could not find her. Her body was later found on Sunday morning in a pond in the Suryapur Hat area under the Baruipur Police Station. The family mentioned four suspects in the FIR.

Stating police negligence and slow movement, residents protested near the Sealdah-Namkhana railway station, halting train services, while another group blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar road by burning wooden logs and tyres. It was amid this chaos that protesters spotted one of the suspects, which led to the mob attack. The protesters ended the blockade only after the Inspector General of Police, Presidency Range, Kankarprasad Barui, assured them that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the crime.

SI Aarghya Mandal rescued another suspect, Prabhas Mondal, from the protests, who was later interrogated and arrested. Reports suggest that the CM called the girl’s father, who later said, “I have spoken with the CM. She has asked us to go to Nabanna on Tuesday. She said that no culprit will be spared.”

The administration has appealed to everyone to wait for verified facts, maintain peace, and not make hasty decisions without lawful guidance. The ban on gatherings has also been imposed in the surrounding areas of Narendrapur and Sonarpur to prevent potential tension.
