The National Security Guard (NSG) has initiated Operation ‘BRICS Kavach’ to intensify security preparations for the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
As part of the enhanced security measures, the NSG conducted mock drills in coordination with the Delhi Police and other security forces in accordance with its counter-terrorism and contingency response measures. Nearly 100 NSG commandos were part of the mock drills held across four locations in New Delhi.
The mock exercises were conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Rajghat, Bharat Mandapam and the Army Polo Ground to rehearse rescue operations.
The Delhi Police's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, which was formed in 2009 following the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, was also present and is likely to be part of the security measures during the summit.
Various terrorist attack scenarios were simulated by the commandos. The NSG drills focused on anti-terrorism, hostage rescue and helicopter slithering. Similar mock exercises will be conducted this week leading up to the event.
According to government officials, the prime objective of these mock drills was to anticipate potential terrorist threats and rehearse the procedures required to activate an integrated terrorism crisis management mechanism during the summit, news agency ANI reports.
"Similar mock exercises are also planned this week, under which special strategies will be developed for each scenario, ensuring they can be effectively applied in real-life situations in case of any mishap during the international event being conducted in Delhi," ANI quoted an official as saying.
