On Sunday, the Jan Suraaj Party announced that its founder, Prashant Kishor, will make his electoral debut in the upcoming Bihar bypoll on July 30, contesting from the Bankipur assembly seat.
The party's decision was announced by its state president, Manoj Bharti, after its core committee meeting.
The election results will be announced on August 3.
The seat was vacated by BJP president Nitin Nabin after he got elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Janata Janshakti Dal (JJD) chief Tej Pratap Yadav had earlier nominated social activist Veena Manvi as his party's candidate for the bypoll in the seat.
The BJP, for which the seat is a stronghold, is yet to formally announce a candidate. Reportedly, the party is considering Ajay Alok, Neel Ratan Ghosh, and Ajeet Kumar Lali as the probable candidates.
Jan Suraaj Party's setback during 2025 Bihar assembly election
Kishor, who launched his party last year and contested the 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, suffered a major setback as the party failed to convert its high-profile campaign momentum into electoral victories.
Kishor's party could not secure a single seat in the assembly elections.
Despite launching a padyatra and a campaign promising structural reforms, employment, and an end to traditional caste-driven politics, the party faced a near-total wipeout.
The election ultimately resulted in a massive landslide victory for the Nitish Kumar-led NDA (which secured 202 seats), leaving little to no room for a third-front disruptor.
While Prashant Kishor was the central face of the party's outreach, his decision not to personally contest any seat during the general assembly cycle was viewed by many analysts as a factor that dampened the party's overall momentum.
Bankipur assembly seat, a BJP stronghold
However, the Bankipur assembly constituency is one of the safest and most deeply entrenched BJP strongholds in all of Bihar.
BJP leader Nitin Nabin has held the Bankipur seat uninterrupted since 2010, securing consecutive victories in 2010, 2015, 2020, and most recently in the November 2025 assembly elections (where he won with a commanding 62.6% vote share against the RJD).
Even so, Prashant Kishor is highly likely to secure significantly more votes for the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) in Bankipur than the party did during the general assembly elections.
With Kishor personally contesting this by-election, the race transforms from a routine local election into a high-stakes, star-studded referendum. His heavy media presence, name recognition, and personal political equity will easily pull a much larger share of urban, undecided, and youth voters than a proxy candidate could.
