Yash’s multi-lingual gangster drama "Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups" is facing a major financial setback after a disappointing theatrical run. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the film’s post-theatrical digital streaming rights are now reportedly attracting offers as low as ₹30 crore, a huge drop from the deal that was available before its release.
Before the film reached theatres on August 26, its makers reportedly received an offer of around ₹150 crore from a major streaming platform. However, Yash and the production team turned down the offer, reportedly seeking more than ₹200 crore. They expected a strong theatrical performance to increase the film’s digital value.
Instead, "Toxic" received mixed reviews and faced negative word-of-mouth, particularly over its violence, adult themes, weak screenplay and long runtime. Its box office collections fell sharply during the weekdays, making streaming platforms more cautious about acquiring the film.
Zee5, or Zee Studios, is reportedly the only major platform still considering the digital rights, with an offer of around ₹30 crore for the movie in all languages. The reported figure is far below the original pre-release offer.
The financial situation is especially difficult because "Toxic" was reportedly made on a massive budget of ₹500 crore to ₹600 crore. With worldwide gross earnings standing at around ₹337.80 crore by Day 12, the film is expected to suffer a substantial loss. Industry estimates suggest the makers could be facing a loss of roughly ₹300 crore. The film’s adult-oriented treatment is also expected to limit its satellite television value, leaving the producers with fewer options for recovering their investment.
The film had a spectacular opening, collecting ₹101.10 crore net in India on its first day and around ₹140.75 crore worldwide. However, the momentum did not last. Collections dropped to lower single-digit figures during the first week as negative word-of-mouth spread.
In an attempt to improve the film’s value on streaming platforms, the makers are reportedly considering a new edit specifically for OTT. Whether this strategy can improve the film’s digital prospects remains to be seen. For now, "Toxic" stands as a striking example of how quickly a big theatrical expectation can turn into a major financial challenge.
