In a major twist, the police have made an arrest in the death of a 26-year-old son of a Pune businessman at Lohagad Fort on Sunday. Ketan Agarwal, son of Pune-based businessman Vishal Agarwal, died after falling into a 400-ft-deep gorge while trekking the Lohagad Fort.
Initial probe has revealed that the death was not an accident but a murder. Police arrested Ketan’s fiancée and her male friend on Tuesday.
A senior official from Pune Rural Police told The Indian Express that the investigation revealed “leads” and the probe confirmed that it was not an accident but murder. “We have arrested the fiancée and her male friend,” the report quoted a senior officer. “Further probe is on. More details of the case will be shared soon,” the officer added.
Meanwhile, local media reports said Ketan’s fiancée pushed him into the gorge. The duo had gone to the Fort to celebrate the fiancée’s birthday. They reached the fort early in the morning and were trekking around 10:30 am when she allegedly pushed into the gorge.
On being alerted, the Pune police immediately deployed search-and-rescue experts from trekkers’ groups such as Shivadrug Mitra and Vanyajeev Rakshak Maval. Though the search teams recovered Agarwal’s body from the valley and rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to reports, Ketan and the woman were engaged to be married in November. The family had booked a palace in Jaipur for the wedding by spending Rs 17 crore and even chartered two special planes for fly in the guests to Jaipur.
Unconfirmed reports state that the woman did not want to marry Ketan and hatched a plan with her friend to remove him from the picture. They plotted to take Ketan to the Lohagad Fort. The plan was carried out, and the woman told police that Ketan fell into the valley while clicking pictures.
There are reports that police received significant clues from the phone records of Ketan and from the statements of the people who were at the Fort during the time of the incident.
