Bangladesh has sought clarification from India on former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s planned virtual address from New Delhi scheduled for August 5. This is at an event hosted by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia in New Delhi, marking the second anniversary of the student-led uprising that toppled her government.
However, Dhaka has issued a warning to New Delhi, stating that any political activity of the former prime minister in Indian territory would hurt bilateral relations between the two countries. Bangladesh had earlier warned India not to provide fugitives to make political statements on Indian soil.
“We are moving forward with India with a forward-looking approach. We don’t want that progress to be affected. India has to be clear on its stance,” Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam told Reuters.
As per local media reports, the Foreign Advisor told the High Commissioner that Bangladesh expected India's cooperation in ensuring that no person from the banned organisation can use Indian soil to make political statements or conduct any activities aimed at creating instability within Bangladesh. He mentioned that such activities can harm the positive progress of bilateral relations.
The Indian High Commissioner assured that the matter will be considered properly, necessary inquiries will be made, and efforts will be made in this regard, the report added.
Hasina is to join the private event alongside her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and other speakers and the event is expected to provide details of Hasina’s future political plans along with her proposed return to Bangladesh.
