Parts of Delhi were taken over by a dust storm on Tuesday afternoon, bringing temporary relief from the heat.
Weather forecasts also showed that the dust storms are likely to spread from Gurugram and Delhi to other parts of the national capital region in a short span of time.
The IMD has also issued a red alert in Delhi-NCR for isolated rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Earlier, an orange alert was issued.
The update comes as the weather office predicted severe thunderstorms with lightning in the next few hours.
High-speed winds reaching speeds of 80 to 100 kilometres per hour are likely to take over most of Delhi in a few hours. Most areas of Delhi were placed under the red alert.
The district authorities and disaster management officials have been alerted to take necessary precautions.
Meanwhile, many took to social media to share videos of the storm. The clips show the storm creating poor visibility, disrupting normal life in the city.
Dust storms were also predicted for parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, including Sonipat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Rewari, Palwal, Bagpat, Sikandrabad, Barsana, Alwar, and Deeg, HT reported.
Parts of Delhi are also experiencing light rain along with the dust storms. Residents in the region are advised to be cautious due to the possibility of gusty winds and sudden weather changes. The city is set to experience partly cloudy skies with very light to light rain. The surface winds are expected to reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 50 kmph towards the evening of June 23.
Maximum temperatures will remain between 39 degrees Celucius and and 41 degrees celcius. The minimum temperatures recorded were around 26.8 degrees Celcius.
