The Deendayal Port has so far recorded a cargo throughput of 70.03 million metric tonnes in fiscal year 2026-27, which reflects a 23 per cent year-on-year growth.
It has now become the fastest among India’s major ports to cross the 70 million-metric-tonne mark—which it also did 32 days faster than last year.
Next, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port has emerged as the world's fastest-growing container port in a global list that features only one other Indian port—the Mundra Port—in its ranking of the top 30 container ports for the first half of 2026.
According to the ranking from France-based Alphaliner, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port handled 4.40 million TEUs from January to June this year, as compared to 3.87 million TEUs over the same period last year, which reflects a growth of 13.6 per cent. This strong growth has led to the port's ranking climbing by seven places from #28 to #21—just behind the Colombo Port in Sri Lanka.
The Mumbai-based port also benefitted greatly when the Indian Railways on August 21 operated their first double-stack long-haul container train. The 1.3-km-long train travelled from the port to CONCOR’s Goods Cargo Terminal at Varnama in Gujarat's Vadodara via the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
This is expected to boost container movement from the Mumbai-based port by allowing larger volumes of freight to be transported using a single train.
Moving on, the Mormugao Port in Goa set a new benchmark with a record loading performance of 37,405 metric tonnes in just 24 hours.
Finally, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port recorded a strong 17.42 per cent boost in vinyl chlorides cargo handling during April-July in fiscal year 2026-27, while the furnace oil cargo throughput grew by more than 50 per cent during the same period.
