While US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday said Washington will sever Tehran's ties to outside world, Iran's security chief warned that the United States will face a "new strategy" in the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Bessent said the US will systematically take out bad actors, hinting that airlines, maritime and digital assets could targeted in a bid to increase economic pressure on Tehran.
However, sources quoted by Reuters revealed that the Trump administration intended to "keep the war quiet" ahead of the Congressional elections in November. This comes as polls show Americans opposing the war by more than a two-to-one margin.
After the strikes, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said it is now looking at new plan to counter the fresh US sanctions. "You will soon see that Iran's new strategy on the battlefield, in diplomacy and in confronting the economic blockade will shatter your foundations," Rezaei posted on X.
Earlier, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman slammed the deadly US strike on a wedding ceremony in the southern city of Kuhestak a "war crime".
"The truth of this unlawful war of choice — and the true face of the war crime — is in Sirik, where a wedding ceremony was brutally bombed as part of America’s desperate struggle to conceal its failure," foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei posted.
Four people, including a child, were killed in the attack while 50 others were injured, according to the Iranian Red Crescent.
