An angry mob set fire to the house of an accused who was involved with the murder of a man in Bairagiwala, a part of Dehradun in Uttarakhand, on Saturday.

The mob pelted stones at the house and demanded that the accused be arrested and that their house be demolished.

The administration has now shut down the internet in the location after the incident, as tensions and violence escalated.

On Saturday, members of the Muslim community protested outside the house of Bhagwat Prasad over a water dispute between them. In the violence, Vinod Kumar was killed using a hammer by a group of people.

Four others were critically injured.

A case was registered earlier, naming 12 people in the murder of the BJP OBC Morcha district social media co-ordinator, Vinod Kumar, in Bairagiwala.

Dehradun ASP Pankaj Gairola said that members of one community attacked the other using sharp weapons and hammers.

A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the attackers.

The deceased's brother, Ashok Kumar, son of Bhagwat Prasad Bairagiwala, said in a statement to the police that there was a dispute regarding water in the neighbouring field, which belongs to Imtiaz, son of Shamshu.

He alleged that the family had gathered with about 30-35 people outside the house with sticks and shovels.

CCTV footage of the incident shows people attacking each other with  a stick, and others screaming and running.

Police said that the dispute initially started over water. However, it escalated into full-blown violence.

Hindu organisations that arrived at the site after the incident are now demanding that the accused person’s homes be bulldozed.

Bulldozer action was used on the home of one of the accused persons in the case.

Police were deployed to the site after the communal tension broke out in the area. They are monitoring the situation in the village to prevent further escalations.
