In yet another instance of a virtual relationship going wrong, a 40-year-old woman went to the Nautanwa Police Station in Uttar Pradesh. The mother of four alleged that she had met a person on Instagram and fallen in love with him. The bond grew stronger, and they soon married. However, the "husband" has decided to terminate the relationship after having distanced himself from her for a while.
When the entire story was narrated by the woman, an air of bizarre confusion gripped the Nautanwa Police Station. The person whom the woman identified as her "husband" was a minor. He was not even 16—reportedly at least five years younger than the woman's eldest child. There was no way the two of them could have married legally.
According to the woman, the virtual friendship began over Instagram messaging. The duo were impressed by each other's reels and started talking, Aaj Tak said in a report. The friendship soon made way for romance, the woman reportedly told the police.
The woman, originally from Gorakhpur, claimed their relationship became serious enough for marriage, although no official documents supporting this claim have been presented. She reached out to Nautanwa police after the boy reportedly refused to live with her. The minor was residing in Chennai with his father, the Hindi daily claimed.
Since the matter involved a minor, the UP Police's priority was to handle the situation amicably and they decided to make both parties aware of the legal circumstances. The police said both parties were counselled, after which the matter was settled. Family members and people around them also tried to explain the situation to the woman. Eventually, both sides agreed not to remain in contact in the future.
Nautanwa Station House Officer Basant Singh said the woman had submitted a complaint but later stated that she did not want any legal action.
