The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced key revisions to the language scheme for Classes 9 and 10, effective from the 2026–27 academic year. Since the current academic session began in April 2026, the board will adopt a transitional approach during implementation.
R1, R2, and R3
Under the revised policy, students in Classes 9 and 10 will be required to study three languages–R1, R2, and R3–starting July 1, 2026.
All three must be different languages
CBSE clarified that R2 must be different from R1 and R3 must be different from both R1 and R2.
At least 2 languages must be Indian
CBSE has mandated that at least two of these must be native Indian languages. Schools have been directed to update their language options on the OASIS website by June 30.
R3 will not have external board exam in Class 10
In a bid to reduce academic pressure, CBSE has decided that the third language (R3) will not have an external board examination in Class 10. However, internal assessment will be mandatory, and students must pass the subject to receive certification. Marks will be recorded on final certificates.
Students could be exempted in certain cases
Exemptions will be available for Children with Special Needs and foreign-return students. CBSE schools abroad have also been given exemptions.
Foreign languages allowed but with riders
Students who wish to study a foreign language may do so only if the other two selected languages are Indian. Foreign languages may also be taken as an optional fourth language.
Class 6 R3 textbooks can be used during transition
CBSE has informed schools that Class 6 R3 textbooks in 19 scheduled languages will be made available before July 1.
Students in Classes 9 and 10 can use Class 6 R3 textbooks for the selected language during the 2026–27 session until dedicated R3 textbooks are introduced.
Use of supplementary materials encouraged
Schools have also been encouraged to supplement Class 6 textbooks with local and regional literary content, including poems, short stories, and fiction works. CBSE said detailed guidelines on the selection of supplementary materials will be issued by June 15.
