In his first speech after BJP announced him as West Bengal chief minister pick, Suvendu Adhikari said he will form a committee to investigate crimes involving Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.

"Fear is out and, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has said, trust is in," Adhikari said amid cheers from MLA-elects and supporters.

Adhikari also assured Bengal's voters that the new BJP government is committed to fulfilling its promises listed in the Sankalp Patra. "The people of Bengal have given us a historic mandate. We will fulfil all the promises made in the BJP's poll manifesto in Bengal. Let Centre, state work together to fulfil aspirations of people of Bengal," he said.

He was addressing the BJP's MLAs-designate in Bengal after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the party elected him as the leader of the BJP legislature party.

"The process of electing the legislature party leader has been completed. Eight proposals were received and all of them had only one name. Adequate time was given for a second name, but no other name was proposed. Therefore, I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the chief minister of West Bengal," Shah said.

Adhikari will take oath as chief minister at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Saturday, May 9. It will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Shah and several other BJP leaders and BJP CMs from other states.

Adhikari, who was formerly a close aide of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, joined the BJP in December 2020. Soon, he became a key BJP leader in Bengal and went on to defeat Mamata in Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections. This time too, he defeated Mamata in her home turf, Bhabanipur.
