Three minor sisters died after jumping from their ninth-floor apartment in the Loni area of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
The incident occurred around 2 am at Bharat City, a residential township. The motive behind the incident is still under investigation, though media reports suggest the girls may have been distressed after their parents objected to their excessive involvement in online gaming.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar Singh said the deceased have been identified as Pakhi (12), Prachi (14), and Nishika (16).
“The Police Response Vehicle received information at around 2:15 am that three girls had jumped from the balcony of a ninth-floor apartment in Bharat City, under the Tilamod police station area,” Singh said. “They were taken by ambulance to the 50-bed hospital in Loni, where doctors declared all three dead. Further legal proceedings are underway.”
According to an NDTV report, a suicide note has surfaced in which the girls have purpotedly apologised to their father for taking the extreme step.
"Is diary me jo kuch bhi likha hai vo sab padh lo quki ye sab sach hai. (Read everything written in this diary because it's the truth). Read now!,” the note said in a mix of Hindi and English.
"I'm really sorry. Sorry, Papa," the note added.
The girls, according to the report, were were very close and carried out most daily activities together, including bathing, eating, sleeping and attending school.
They are believed to have become involved in a Korean online task-based game during the Covid-19 period and continued playing it regularly. Police also found that the girls had not been attending school consistently.
Further investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
