The parents of foreign-based gangster Goldy Brar were arrested on Monday in Punjab’s Muktsar district in connection with an extortion case, police said.
Brar’s father, Shamsher Singh, and his mother, Preetpal Kaur, were taken into custody following a complaint filed by a Muktsar resident in 2024. Although the couple originally hails from Faridkot district, they own a house in Adesh Nagar in Muktsar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana said.
An FIR has been filed against the couple under Sections 308(4), 351(1), and 351(3)BNS at the Sadar Police Station in Sri Muktsar Sahib. According to the police, Brar's parents have no legitimate source of income and live off the money obtained through ransom.
The complaint was lodged on December 3, 2024, by Satnam Singh, an employee in the Education Department. In his statement to the police, Singh reported receiving a threatening call in which he was warned that his life and his family’s safety would be at risk unless he paid a ransom of Rs 50 lakhs.
The arrests come amid an intensified crackdown by the Punjab Police against organised crime and gangster networks operating in the state.
According to a PTI report, police have identified and mapped locations linked to around 1,200 associates of nearly 60 foreign-based gangsters, as well as about 600 of their family members allegedly involved in criminal activities as part of the ongoing operation.
Who is Goldy Brar?
Satinderjeet Singh, alias Goldy Brar, is one of the prime accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.
Brar travelled to Canada on a student visa in 2017 and is currently believed to be residing in the United States. He was previously an active member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang but reportedly split from the group last year and later joined the Brar–Rohit Godara–Kala Jatheri gang.
India has designated Brar as a terrorist under anti-terror laws for his alleged involvement in the smuggling of high-grade arms, ammunition, and explosives through drones across the border.
