The Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday night made a chilling discovery after unearthing a skeleton buried seven feet into the ground at Kanpur's Tikwapur village.

The skeleton, dug up at about 11 PM under light from police vehicles and people's torches, belonged to 45-year-old Reshma, the police told NDTV.

According to the report, Reshma, a mother to seven children, had been killed by her lover Gorelal about ten months ago, for which he has been arrested.

How Gorelal was caught

It was after the death of her first husband, Rambabu Sankhwar—with whom she had her seven children—that she began a relationship with Gorelal, her neighbour.

She eventually moved in with him, which estranged her children as they severed ties with her.

Still, Babloo (one of her sons) had sent her an invite for a wedding in the family on November 29.

When she did not show up, a suspicious Babloo asked Gorelal about it, to which he replied that she would "never return".

Babloo initially took it to be a morbid joke, but later filed a police case when he continued to give vague replies about Reshma.

It was when the police questioned Gorelal that he confessed to strangling Reshma to death in April 2025, as per the report.

Gorelal also told the police that he had kept her dead body at his house for two days as he deliberated where to bury her. He had first planned to dump her body in the canal, before he decided to bury it in a desolated area.

He revealed the spot during the interrogation as well.

"We have recovered the skeleton, and her relatives have identified it by her jewellery and clothes. The skeleton has now been sent for post-mortem and DNA testing," said Kanpur District Commissioner of Police, Deependra Nath Chaudhary.
