Hyderabad: Heavy rains cause traffic snarls, 3 people feared missing

Hyderabad saw heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Search operations are underway for three missing persons amidst warnings of further heavy rainfall from IMD.

Heavy rains over the past 24 hours have caused severe waterlogging and traffic snarls across Hyderabad, Telangana. Naraynraopet in Siddipet recorded the highest rainfall of 245.5 mm, according to the Telangana.

Abdullapurmet-Thatianaram in Rangareddy followed with a rainfall of 128mm, while Musheerabad in Hyderabad received between 114.5mm and 124mm at different monitoring points.

Three people were reported missing in separate incidents of falling into open nalas following the heavy rains on Sunday. Two youths, Arjun and Rama, were swept away after falling into the Afzalsagar nala between 7:30 to 8 pm.

A man named Sunny was washed away in Parsigutta after a retaining wall collapsed under the pressure of water. His body has ot been recovered.

The fire safety department and disaster response force have launched search operations for the missing persons.

Waterlogging was reported from Jubilee Hills, Tolichowki, Shaikpet Nala, Biodiversity Junction, Raidurgam, Malakpet, and Azamabad.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Vijayalaxmi Gadwal was spotted monitoring the situation from the command control centre in Banjara Hills, according to local news.

Many residents, however, complained of fragile drainage infrastructure and called for urgent and permanent solutions.

The IMD’s meteorological centre warned of heavy rainfall at isolated locations across several districts, including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, and others.
