Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in the port city of Tianjin on Sunday. The two leaders agreed to take positive mutually agreeable measure to ensure peace at the border and strengthen the ties between the countries.

- The Chinese president said, "We must not let the border issue define the overall China-India relationship.”
- The leaders agreed that China-India ties could be "stable and far-reaching" if both sides focused on viewing each other as partners instead of rivals.
- Xi said India and China must shoulder their “historic responsibility” to uphold multilateralism, work together for a multipolar world, and advance democracy in international relations. He added that the two countries should contribute to peace and prosperity in Asia and across the globe.

- The meeting took place just five days after Washington placed a 50 per cent tariff on India. China has opposed the US’s tariffs. The foreign ministry said that the countries' ties should not be seen through the lens of a third country.
