The Army official was reportedly carrying 16-kg cabin luggage -- more than double the permitted limit of 7 kg. The SpiceJet employees asked him to pay for the luggage, which infuriated the passenger. Refusing to pay, he tried to forcefully enter the aerobridge without completing the boarding process. After he violated the security protocols, the CISF official intervened, and he was escorted back to the gate. However, the passenger turned violent at the game and used the information board kept at the check-in to attack the SpiceJet ground staff.
A video of the incident going viral on social media showed the officer attacking the airline staff. One staff member suffered a spinal fracture and serious jaw injuries. “One SpiceJet employee collapsed unconscious on the floor, but the passenger continued kicking and hitting the fainted employee,” the statement said, adding that the injured employees were rushed to the hospital and remain under treatment for the grievous injuries sustained.
The passenger was restrained by the CISF official. The statement from CISF said its personnel intervened promptly, managed the situation, and ensured no disruption to flight operations.
The airline has filed a police complaint and is in the process of putting the Army officer on a no-fly list. The Army has also taken cognisance of the incident. It said it is looking into the matter and is supporting the civil investigation.
