The Jammu and Kashmir police have suspended two officers from the District Special Branch (DSB) after a young man named Mohammad Parvez was shot dead by police in the Sure Chak area of Jammu on Thursday.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Domana Mudassar Hussain, will investigate the incident. The district magistrate has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident by the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Jammu South. The report must be submitted within two weeks.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Joginder Singh issued an order suspending Head Constable Baljinder Singh and Selection Grade Constable Pawan Singh. The officers have been sent to the District Police Lines (DPL) and asked to hand over their uniforms. They will continue to receive a basic allowance while under suspension.

A departmental enquiry has also begun, with the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Headquarters asked to complete the investigation and share the findings with higher authorities.

Parvez’s family said that senior police and civil officers met them after the funeral in Javed Nagar, Nikki Tawi, promising compensation and a government job for one family member, a promise that has not been officially confirmed. However, no official has confirmed this promise yet.

Subsequently, the family, joined by community members and Gujjar leaders, protested, accusing the police of unjustified killing. Activist Talib Choudhary questioned whether the police had the right to take a life, even if the person was under suspicion.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, and Minister Javed Rana condemned the killing, stressing that police should use force responsibly. Abdullah said the incident was “deeply regrettable” and stressed that police should use force responsibly. Mehbooba said even if Parvez was suspected of dealing drugs, justice should be delivered through legal means, not through violence.

As enquiries move forward, the family is waiting for justice and the fulfilment of the promises made, while anger and concern grow across the community.
