President's rule was first imposed on February 13 in strife-torn Manipur following heightened clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities in the state. The development came three days after the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by N. Biren Singh resigned owing to failure in curbing the violence in the northeastern state.
Ethnic clashes broke out between Meitei and Kuki groups in the state in May 2023. The Congress has been targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over violence in Manipur and has demanded that the prime minister should visit the state. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has visited Manipur multiple times since violence broke out. Close to 260 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless in the clashes.
