Two key functionaries of Karnataka State Cricket Association, the secretary and treasurer, have resigned from their respective roles taking "moral responsibility" for the stampede that claimed 11 lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory celebrations this week. The resignations come amid a police probe over the stampede.

A. Shankar, the secretary of KSCA and E.S. Jairam, treasurer, have tendered their resignation over the incident. Both the functionaries reportedly tendered their resignation to the association's president on Thursday night.

In a joint statement, Shankar and Jairam said they had submitted their resignations to the KSCA president. "...due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, we wish to state that we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as the secretary and treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association," it said.

The Karnataka government has ordered a probe against RCB, the events firm - DNA and KSCA over the stampede in which 11 persons were killed and 33 persons suffered injuries. The stampede happened outside Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday when a huge crowd tried to enter the premises through its gates to attend RCB victory celebrations.

On Friday, KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, secretary Shankar and treasurer Jayaram had submitted in the Karnataka High Court that the gate management and crowd management were not the responsibility of the association and they had sought permission to hold RCB IPL celebrations at Vidhan Soudha. While the event at the Vidhan Soudha passed off without any major glitch, chaos erupted outside the stadium.

The KSCA has approached the Karnataka High Court to quash the FIR against them in the matter. The High Court has granted interim protection for KSCA office bearers from arrest till the next hearing.
