The DMK on Thursday decided to move the Supreme Court over the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. Announcing the decision, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said the passage of the Bill was a 'sad development'.

The Bill was passed with 288-232 votes in the Parliament at midnight, after a heated debate that lasted for almost 12 hours. In his statement to the Tamil Nadu assembly, Stalin fixated on the number of votes received against the controversial Bill, arguing that these were not to be ignored.

"This Bill should be withdrawn. The BJP has passed the Bill despite opposition from major political parties, with help from friendly alliance partners. The passing of the Bill in the wee hours is an attack on the Indian constitution, against secularism,” Stalin stated.

As a mark of protest, Stalin and the DMK MLAs attended the assembly proceedings wearing black badges.
