The flood situation remains grim in Assam as the death toll increased to 58 on Saturday. As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 29 districts have been affected due to the floods.
Close to 24 lakh people are reeling under waters, official sources told PTI. According to officials, major rivers including Brahmaputra are flowing over the danger level across the state. Officials said Dhubri is the worst hit district where more than 7.95 lakh people were reeling under waters. Among other severely affected districts are Cachar and Darrang, with over 1.50 lakh people hit in each of the districts. The toll in this year's flood, landslide and storm is at 70, the sources added.
As per ASDMA’s data on Saturday, 68,768.5 hectares of agricultural land have been affected due to the floods and 3,535 villages have been submerged in the floods. According to reports over 5.26 lakh people are sheltered in 577 relief camps set up across the state and arrangements have been made for distributing food and other essentials to them.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday the flood situation is improving and water has receded at several places. He added power supply has been cut at several places owing to the flood situation.
Major rivers including the Brahmaputra were flowing over the danger level at multiple locations across the state from Jorhat to Dhubri. Other rivers like Burhidehing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Kopili, Barak and Sankosh have also breached the red mark in different places.
Animals, including poultry, have also been affected in the deluge, with vast tracts of cropland also under water. A total of 15,49,161 animals have been affected by the floods, a state bulletin said.
Public infrastructure damaged by the flood includes 126 roads and two bridges, the bulletin said.
