The new Terminal 2 was built at a cost of around Rs 4000 and is the India’s largest nature-themed airport in Northeast India. The overall project cost is said to stand at Rs 5000 crore, which includes Rs 1000 crore marked for maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.
The airport stretches across 1.4 lakh square metres, and it is designed to handle up to 13.1 million passengers annually.
The terminal is seven times larger than the existing facility and can handle up to 34 air traffic movements per hour, the highest in the region.
PM Modi took a tour of the new terminal building.
The design of the airport was made to mimic Assam's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, and was made under the theme “Bamboo Orchids”.
The terminal is equipped with digital facilities such as DigiYatra contactless entry points, automated baggage handling, and fast-track security systems for seamless operations, enhancing passenger convenience.

The airport aims to be a crucial hub for not just Assam but for all of the northeast.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, stated, “It is an honour to welcome Adarniya Narendra Modi Ji to the sacred land of Maa Kamakhya. Over the next 2 days, Hon'ble Prime Minister's presence will add fresh momentum to Assam’s growth story & catapult it into the next phase of Vikas.”
On his two-day visit to the state, PM Modi will also be paying floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak Sthal, dedicated to the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the historic Assam Movement. “After that, I will be present in Namrup, Dibrugarh, for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ammonia-Urea Fertiliser Project of Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited. This is an important project, which will help meet the fertiliser needs of Assam as well as other states. At the same time, it will reduce imports, as a result of which self-reliance will increase,” the PM said.
