Following torrential rains that hit Kerala on Wednesday evening, a red alert was declared in five districts including Ernakulam. Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kottayam are the other districts in the category, reports confirmed. An earlier release from the weather department had included only the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts under the red alert category.

Several roads and alleys in Kochi were submerged in water after the city received heavy rainfall in the evening. Here are five weather updates that Keralites need to know amidst the heavy rains.

1. An orange alert is in place in the districts of Kozhikode, Thrissur, Wayanad, Malappuram, Kollam and the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, Manorama Online said in a report.

2. Yellow alert: Kasaragod and Kannur districts.

3. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the rains expected to hit Kerala have the potential to flash floods and deluge-like conditions.

4. If the heavy downpour continues, residents of landslide-prone areas need to take precautions. Urban areas and low-lying localities are prone to waterlogging as a consequence of the showers.

5. Fishermen have been aksed not to venture into the sea as the weather remains unfavourable. High tides are expected and residents of coastal areas need to remain vigilant, the news report said.
