After scorching heat that tormented Keralites for several weeks, the rain clouds have finally approached the southern state. Kerala is expected to receive heavy rainfall in the days to come, the weather department has confirmed. A red alert has been issued for three Kerala districts as the monsoon is expected to arrive on May 31, reports said.

1. Red alert in 3 districts: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts are likely to get heavy rainfall on May 19 (Sunday) and May 20 (Monday). A red alert has been issued for the three districts for two days, Manorama Online said in a report.
2. Orange alert in 4 districts: An orange alert is issued for Thiruvananthapuram Kollam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts for three days starting April 19, Sunday.
3. May 21, Tuesday: Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki can expect heavy showers; orange alert declared.

Understanding IMD's weather warnings:
The IMD on Thursday had predicted very heavy rainfall in the state between May 18 and 20 due to the likely prevalence of strong westerly and southwesterly winds in the region, reported news agency PTI.
- A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert means very heavy rain (6 cm to 20 cm).
- A yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 to 11 cm.
