The deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours, bringing heavy rain to coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh will witness heavy to very heavy rains during the next two days. A deep depression formed during the midnight of December 2, about 330 km from Puducherry in the southwest and about 340 km from southeast of Chennai is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, dubbed 'Michaung', in the next 12 hours.

The cyclonic formation according to the Indian Meteorological Department is likely to prevail over southern Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu coastal areas in the early hours of December 4. It will then move northward along the coastal areas and cross the southern Andhra coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5.

According to the IMD, Cyclone Michaung is expected to attain its maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph.

Due to heavy rains on December 2 and in the wee hours of December 3, there is water-logging in several parts of the city. Most of the city suburbs are inundated in water.

People in Chennai and other coastal districts in northern Tamil Nadu have been asked to stay indoors on December 4 and 5.
