Telangana polls: A day after her return to Congress, Vijayashanthi appointed party's campaign coordinator

Actress-politician Vijayashanthi, who resigned from the BJP and joined the Congress on Friday, has been appointed as the party's Chief Coordinator of the Campaign and Planning Committee for the upcoming Telangana assembly polls.

In a blow for the BJP in the state, the veteran actress and former MP rejoined the Congress in the presence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The actor-turned-politician began her political career in 2009 and was elected from the Medak Lok Sabha seat on a BRS (then TRS) ticket. Later, due to differences with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, she joined the Congress. In 2020, she left Congress and joined the saffron party.

Besides Vijayashanthi, several other disgruntled senior BJP leaders, who once left the Congress to join the saffron party, were set to rejoin the Congress. Earlier this month, former Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy announced that he has resigned from the party and will be joining the Congress. He accused the BJP of failing to take an action against the corruption in the KCR government.

In yet another set back for the BJP, Manifesto Committee Chairman and former MP, Vivek Venkataswamy resigned from the party and set to go back to Congress. In another set back, Manifesto Committee Chairman and former MP, Vivek Venkataswamy also resigned from the BJP.

Vijayashanthi had kept away from the BJP's poll campaign, sparking speculations of an exit. The Telangana assembly polls will be held on November 30.
