Kashmir police says, 'Area being sanitized'

Five militants were killed in an encounter at Samnoo village in the Kugam district of south Kashmir during the early hours of Friday. The encounter operation began on Thursday evening.

The identity of the militants and their affiliated group is currently under investigation as the operation continues in the area. The encounter started on Thursday evening after the security forces received information about the presence of the militants in the area.

The exchange of gunfire commenced after the security forces closed in on the militants. The firing paused during the night; security forces had placed lights and cordoned off the region.

On Friday morning the operation recommenced, echoing the area with sporadic gunfire. The joint effort involved the participation of 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the Army’s special forces (9 Para), CRPF, and J&K Police.

Kashmir Zone police tweeted, “Five #terrorists neutralized by Kulgam Police, Army, and CRPF. #Incriminating materials recovered. #Operation in final stage; area being sanitized.”
