IMD predicted heavy rainfall over Northeast India during next two days

Several parts of the nation witnessed heavy rainfall even as some states are being gripped by severe heatwave. Delhi-NCR and other states including Tamil Nadu, Assam, Rajasthan received heavy rainfall on Monday.

In Tamil Nadu, schools in some districts declared holiday due to heavy rains.

Holiday has been declared for schools in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore and Chengalpattu districts on Monday.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rain for next five days in Assam.'Red alert' was issued as very heavy rainfall was predicted across several districts of Assam. The state is also witnessing floods due to the incessant rain. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 33,400 people are hit due to floods in areas including Cachar, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.

Relief camps were set up by the administration.

Extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Northeast India and Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next two days.

"Isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya during 18-20 June," said IMD.

Meanwhile, multiple landslides were reported in West Sikkim district, damaging nearly 100 houses and sweeping away bridges, said officials. Army and central forces have been engaged in rescuing tourists who were trapped in North Sikkim due to landslides and roadblocks. Army has rescued 300 tourists stranded. The troops of Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army assisted the Sikkim government in rescuing 3,500 tourists who were stranded, the statement said. 

Reportedly, downpour caused flash floods along the upper reaches of College Khloa Valley, causing maximum impact at Simphok, where a major bridge was destroyed.

Also, the impact of cyclone 'Biparjoy' has severely affected Rajasthan. The state witnessed flood-like situation due to heavy rainfall in Jalore, Sirohi and Barmer districts.

The Assam government is in touch with all agencies including the Indian Army, Indian Air Force (IAF) and NDRF to tackle the emergency situation.

“The Depression (Remnant of CS BIPARJOY) over central parts of East Rajasthan lay at 2330 IST of 18th June about 60 km west-northwest of Tonk, 60 km east-southeast of Ajmer. Likely to move nearly east-northeastwards and maintain its intensity of Depression during next 12 hrs,” tweeted IMD.
