The Lucknow High Court bench was presented with a knotty problem – to decide whether a girl is 'manglik' or not, and also if her fiancé is right in refusing to marry her. The case caught the attention of the Supreme Court, which has stayed the HC order.

As per astrology, a person born under the influence of Mars is termed as 'manglik'. Marrying such a person is considered to be inauspicious. For instance, there were reports of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being a 'manglik' and that she was first married off to a tulsi plant to ward off evil, before she married Abhishek. The family, of course, denied it.

Gobind Rai alias Monu approached the Lucknow court with the strange plea. The opposing party is listed as the state of UP through the Principal Secretary (Home).

There are six counsels for the petitioner who have argued that since it was discovered that the woman was a 'manglik', the wedding could not be solemnized.

The other party has submitted that the girl is not a 'manglik'.

The bench, on May 25, ruled: “Let Head of Department (Astrology Department), Lucknow University decide the matter whether the girl is mangalik or not and the parties will produce the kundali before the Head of Department (Astrology Department), Lucknow University within ten days from today. The Head of Department (Astrology Department), Lucknow University is directed to submit report in a sealed cover within three weeks to this Court.”
