Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who arrived in Manipur on Monday night for a four-day visit, held meetings with the delegations of the different political and civil society organisations in Imphal to work up a peace formula.

"Held a meeting with a group of women leaders (Meira Paibi) in Manipur. Reiterated the significance of the role of women in the society of Manipur. Together, we are committed to ensuring peace and prosperity in the state," Shah tweeted.

The minister will also visit riot-hit Churachandpur and has also scheduled talks with representatives of both the Meitei and Kuki communities. Shah had already met chief minister N Biren Singh, his cabinet colleague, and intelligence and security officials.

Sources said Kuki leaders and MLAs, many of whom left for neighbouring states, may be flown in for talks with him. Kukis have been demanding a separate administration for districts they live in, failing which they have also asked for President's rule to be imposed on the state.

The meeting has decided to take steps to augment supplies in Manipur and to bring down the prices of essential commodities. Ever since the violence broke out, the prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed in the state.

Compensation

The central and Manipur state government have decided to give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of those who died in the riots. A family member of the deceased will also be provided with a job.

The compensation amount will be equally borne by the centre and the state. The decision was taken at a meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief minister N Biren Singh, on Monday late at night.

Besides, dedicated telephone lines will be set up to dispel rumour-mongering. Shah's meeting also decided to ensure that essential items such as petrol, LPG gas, rice and other food products will be made available in large quantities to cool down prices.

Congress memorandum

A delegation of Congress leaders led by party president Mallikarjun Kharge called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. They submitted a memorandum before the President regarding the situation in Manipur.

"We have put forth 12 demands, including setting up a high-level inquiry commission headed by a serving or retired judge of the Supreme Court," said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

Seeking sustained efforts to bring peace to the state, the party said steps to be taken to confine and control militant groups. The Congress has also demanded that displaced people be rehabilitated and compensated for the loss of life and property. The party has also sought proper educational facilities for children living in relief camps and health and sanitation facilities for all.
