Ten BJP MLAs from Manipur, including former chief minister N Biren Singh and speaker Th Satyabrata Singh, on Saturday left for the national capital for a meeting with the party's central leadership. Some other BJP MLAs are also in the national capital for "personal reasons," a party leader said.

Biren Singh told the press that he was hopeful that "some positive decision" would be taken at the meeting.

"I am expecting positive things for a better Manipur. I hope a positive decision will be taken at the meeting. As far as the formation of the government is concerned, it will be known only after the meeting," he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

MLA Kh Joykishan Singh said the meeting is expected to be related to government formation.

MLA RK Imo Singh said, "We have been called for a meeting tomorrow. Let's see what will happen. We don't have much detail."

BJP has 37 MLAs in the 60-member Manipur assembly.

The northeastern state has been under the President's Rule since February, after Singh resigned amid criticisms over his government's handling of the ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023. Ethnic clashes broke out between Meitei and Kuki groups in the state in May 2023. The Congress has been targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over violence in Manipur and has demanded that the Prime Minister should visit the state. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has visited Manipur multiple times since violence broke out. Close to 260 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless in the clashes.

President's rule was first imposed on February 13 in strife-torn Manipur following heightened clashes.
