Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation the new parliament building on May 28, the Lok Sabha secretariat announced on Thursday.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Modi on Thursday and invited him to inaugurate the new building which “symbolises the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, said an official statement.

“The newly constructed building of Parliament, which will work to further enrich India's glorious democratic traditions and constitutional values, is also equipped with state-of-the-art facilities which will help the Members to perform their functions in a better way,” it said.

The Lok Sabha secretariat noted that in the present Parliament building, which was built in 1927, members were experiencing lack of space and convenient arrangements, which was affecting the efficiency of work of the members.

“Considering the above, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed resolutions urging the government to construct a new building for the Parliament. Consequently, on 10 December 2020, the foundation stone of the new building of Parliament was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,” the statement said.

"Keeping in view the future requirements, arrangements have been made for a meeting of 888 members in the Lok Sabha while 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed building of the Parliament. The joint session of both the Houses will be held in Lok Sabha Chamber," it further said.

In the present building of Parliament, there is a provision for sitting of 543 Members in the Lok Sabha while 250 in the Rajya Sabha.

The new Parliament building, constructed by Tata Projects Ltd, will have a grand constitution hall to showcase India's democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space.

The tender to construct the new Parliament building was awarded to Tata Projects in September 2020 at an estimated cost of Rs 861 crore and later, the cost rose to around Rs 1,200 crore due to additional works.

The original deadline for completing the project was November last year.
