In a major breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security during a road show in Karnataka's Devangere, a man jumped barricade and ran towards his convoy on Saturday. The man, hailing from Koppal, has been detained.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social platforms. The police, however, sought to downplay the incident, saying it was just an “unsuccessful attempt”.

ADGP Law and Order Alok Kumar tweeted : "As being reported in a section of media, there was no breach in security as such of Hon'ble PM at Davangere today. It was an unsuccessful attempt. He was caught immediately by myself and SPG at a safe distance. Appropriate action is being taken in this regard".

In a similar incident in Karnataka's Hubbali in January, a young boy jumped onto the road and ran towards the prime minister with a garland. He was whisked away by the security personnel.

Meanwhile, the prime minister on Saturday addressed a poll rally in Devangere where he made a strong pitch for the return of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Seeking a resounding mandate for a successive stint for the BJP in Karnataka, Modi said a stable government led by the saffron party was the need of the hour for the State's fast paced development.

This visit of the prime minister—his seventh to Karnataka this year—gains significance as the Election Commission is expected to announce the poll schedule for Assembly elections, due by May, in the next few days.
