A day after the acid attack on a 17-year-old girl, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal issued a notice to e-commerce sites Amazon and Flipkart, according to reports. The girl, who was attacked by two bike-borne men on Wednesday morning, is undergoing treatment at the Safdarjung Hospital.
Police said in a statement that the accused procured the acid from Flipkart. In her letter, Maliwal asked for the details of the seller who has placed acid as a 'product' on the platform. The panel has also sought a copy of the license for selling acid online, and a copy of the policy adopted by the firms on the sale of government-regulated products.
Three people—prime accused Sachin Arora and his two friends Harshit Aggarwal (19) and Virender Singh (22)—have been arrested, leading to an outrage with many raising questions over the availability of acid in markets despite a ban. Soon after the incident was reported on Wednesday, Maliwal took to Twitter to question governments on why acid was still freely available for sale.
Sachin and the survivor were friends till September, police said. The accused, who lived in the girl's neighbourhood, attacked her because they had a fallout.
The incident was caught on a CCTV camera and the class 12 student could be seen shaking vigorously after the attack that left her with burns to her face, police said. She was with her younger sister when the attack took place. "The patient is conscious, well oriented and afebrile. She has suffered 8 per cent chemical burns on the face. Eyes have also been affected,” doctors said on Thursday.
